Obol Solves the Soggy Cereal Syndrome

We’re always on the lookout for products that can help make your life easier.  This time it’s the Obol crispy cereal bowl. Last year, Andy showed us the Ooma bowl which uses the same principle, but I think this one looks like an even nicer looking / functioning product. The Obol has two sections. One that [...]

Search History: Google and Germany, Part 2

Following Germany's reunification, victims and villains alike wanted to forget the country's past. And this, for everyone, required privacy. "I've jokingly talked about the privacy tree: It's brown and it has green leaves," said historian Konrad H. Jarausch, referring to Nazis (brown) and Leftists (green).

Switched On: The bedeviled bezel

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

One of the few homages that the Palm Pre paid to the Palm Pilot was the gesture area, a separate part of the display face below the screen used for swipes just as the Pilot had a separate area devoted to entering Graffiti strokes. Unfortunately (like Graffiti before it), the gesture area was one of the least intuitive aspects of the Pre's operation, and HP has been moving away from it as a required navigation element. On the TouchPad, the gesture area has been scrapped in favor of an iPad-like bottom button.

But HP hasn't outright ignored the bezel on the TouchPad. Users can still swipe inbound from the bezel as an alternative way of bringing up its card view. Indeed, in 2011, it seems like nearly everyone has been taking a swipe at the bezel around touchscreen displays. First, RIM introduced inbound bezel swipes as a key navigation element on the PlayBook for activating menus, bringing up applications to launch, and its own webOS-like app switching interface. Microsoft showed how inbound bezel swipes will be part of the navigation for touchscreen devices in Windows 8. And MeeGo also uses the inbound bezel swipe as its keystone user interface element on smartphones...

Redpoint Ventures: Making Money the Old Fashioned Way

Last week we broke the news of the impressive-but-not-jawdropping $200 million acquisition of Cloud.com by Citrix and the stellar year of returns that Redpoint Ventures is having. What makes Redpoint's record so unique is that the firm is having a good year despite the fact that they're not in one of the big five: Zynga, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, 0r Groupon. Hell, let's make it a big six and throw in Pandora since the IPO made so much noise. The venture world has never been more polarized between have and have-not firms.

Hive Player - Android Honeycomb Music Player

Hive Player

While music players for Android smartphones are aplenty, when it comes to music players optimized for Honeycomb the selection is still rather slim. Enter, Hive Player -- a Honeycomb optimized music player that offers a few things the stock music player lacks.

Features:

  • Scrollable widget with music collection navigation (Albums, Artists, All Songs, Playlists, Genres), shuffle, pause/play next and previous.
  • Widget and Player sync with each other - view an album in the widget, then in the player the same album is loaded. Every navigation and song play is synced to each other - even when only the widget or player is running, load the other and it will sync on startup.
  • Play and navigate music library using just the widget - player doesn't even need to be loaded or running.
  • Navigate back through navigation steps using back button on player or widget - uses the standard Android back button on Honeycomb.
  • Albums, Artists, All Songs, Playlists, Genres are displayed on the left and player controls on the right.
  • Multi-Select playlist additions - build a playlist as it should be done, not one song at a time - add multiple albums, artists, genres, songs and even current playlists to a playlist.
  • Duplicates are filtered out when adding to playlists.
  • Search with playlist additions - search and keep searching as you build the ultimate playlist. Search appears over player.

Hive Player comes in two versions, giving users plenty of choice. The lite version is available for free with some restrictions on the widgets, playlists and display options while the paid version with the full features costs only $2. One thing to note though is that if most of your music is stored with Google Music, those files won't show up within the app. Google is not allowing or releasing details to developers to put Music Beta functionality into their music players.

We'll have a full review up soon but in the meantime, you'll find the download link past the break. Give it a shot, and leave some comments. The developer, Nicholas is looking for some feedback on how to improve the app.

Android 3.2 SDK now available, new features get detailed

And just like that, it's official. After hearing about the next incremental step in Honeycomb's journey by way of Huawei's MediaPad, we've seen breadcrumbs about its functional differences. Today, we're being given the full shebang -- Google has just made official v3.2, boosting the API level to 13 and releasing the SDK into the wild in one fell swoop. The new build brings along optimizations for a "wider range of tablets," as well as "compatibility zoom for fixed-sized apps," media sync from SD card (huzzah!) and an extended screen support API. Head on down to the links below for a closer look, and expect to see this rolling out to [insert your favorite Android tablet here] in due time.

ClipIt: Even a Humble Clipboard Can Benefit From Whistles and Bells

For years, a staple tool I have relied on is a clipboard manager to keep tabs on reusable text snippets. The Linux desktop has several noteworthy clipboard managers. Some are much handier than others for working with parcels of text that I can easily swap from a clipping queue to a document or Web page form.
